The Opioid Withdrawal Syndrome
Various symptoms of opioid withdrawal may appear during a period of abstinence from the opioid drug. Some or all may be present. When symptoms start they may be mild but as the syndrome progresses they may become severe. It is not possible for a healthy individual to die from opioid withdrawal; however, it is possible to die from complications, such as dehydration or esophageal tear, so if symptoms begin to develop, it is important that the withdrawing individual seek medical attention. Individuals with heart disease or other health/psychiatric problem should not detox without medical supervision and treatment (cold turkey). Treatment with medications can prevent a withdrawal syndrome from developing.
Opioid Withdrawal Symptoms Include:
- Yawning
